Junior-8: winners of the contest “World through the eyes of young people” were identifiedThe Ministry of Education and Science of the Russian Federation and the Saint- Petersburg State University have identified winners of the contest “World through the eyes of young people”. The winners of the Contest, held this year in the Southern Federal District, are the following: 1. CHUKOV Roman, 16 years old, Stavropol, Stavropol territory The contest “World through the eyes of young people” was organized by the Ministry of Education and Science of the Russian Federation in cooperation with the Saint Petersburg State University and with the assistance of the Plenipotentiary Envoy of the Russian President to the Southern Federal District and executive authorities of the Russian constituent entities that are part of the Southern Federal District. During the first qualifying round, high school students – winners of thematic Olympiads wrote essays on one of the most pressing global problems facing the world community today (in two languages). During the second round, which was completed on March 14, 2009, authors of the best essays presented their works, participated in group discussions and cultural activities, attended English language classes, formal and unofficial events. A panel of experts has selected the contest winners based on the following criteria: excellent command of the English language, ability to present and reason their views in a convincing manner, ability to properly hold a discussion and be an efficient team player. Members of the Russian national team to the 2009 Junior8 Summit, scheduled to be held in Italy in July 2009, will be drawn from the contest’s winners. In April 2009, the contest’s winners will be invited to come to St.Petersburg to attend a final training session arranged by experts from the St.Petersburg University. During this session, they will undergo psychological training and will have training sessions with the experts on the G8 topics, English language training, etiquette training sessions and sessions on how to deal with mass media. The final composition of the Russian national J8 team will be determined based on the results of this session. Moreover, the contest winners will be awarded grants under the programme “Supporting talented youth” which is being implemented within the framework of the national project “Education”. Based on the results of the contest as a final stage of the All-Russia Olympiad, the contest winners who are to graduate high school in 2009 will be admitted to Russian universities on a non-competitive tuition-free basis. Another 8 children will be invited to attend the St.Petersburg Economic Forum. The Expert Committee took this decision in order to encourage talented senior school students from those Russian constituent entities that were not represented among the contest winners, including the following young people: 1.
