15 January: UNICEF teams up with the private sector to give orphans some Christmas magic
100 children from orphanages have received an uncommon New Year’s present – a fabulous journey to the city of Velikiy Ustug – the Ded Moroz’s homeland. The trip was organized by the Charitable foundation “Rasprav krylia” and “Smeshariki” project supported by “Detskiy Mir” and United Nations Children's Fund (UNICEF). A big farewell ceremony for the children was held yesterday at the Yaroslavksiy railway station in Moscow. Life-size Smeshariki puppets entertained the children. A special box to collect mail addressed to Ded Moroz was put at the entrance to the hall. All comers – children and adults - had an opportunity to post their message with their dearest wish. “I have asked Ded Moroz to find a family for me this year” – said one child. “As we see the financial crisis developing into an economic crisis, we have to make sure it will not transform into a social crisis where the most vulnerable will be hit, especially children from vulnerable families. It is certainly not the time to cut social expenditures. The social responsibility expressed by the Corporate World in good times, is even more relevant and needed in these times of uncertainties- said UNICEF Representative for the Russian Federation Bertrand Bainvel, referring to the partnership with the Russian Railways, Smechariki and Detskii Mir. - More than ever we must all unite to protect children and make sure families get all the support they need to care and support them”. In his address Vladimir Yakunin, the president of the Russian Railways mentioned that despite the crisis, the company’s social activities on supporting children and young people would not be reduced. The visit to the Ded Moroz’s homeland will last for two days. The agenda is rich and diverse– children will meet Ded Moroz and his assistants, visit the winter garden and walk on the tale path, meet the magic woodmen and enjoy the attractions. Children will also learn the secrets of famous homecrafts such as shadow stitching and and wood engraving. The organizers of the journey did their best to ensure the orphaned children had a magical and wonderful experience in a special holiday atmosphere.
