January 12: Tupperware leads the way in corporate social responsibility

The Tupperware company (Russia) together with the Swedish International Development Cooperation Agency (SIDA), and UNICEF National Committee in Germany funded research and knowledge to assess the development of the child protection system and progress towards de-institutionalisation in the Russian Federation.

This Research was critical in helping guide and hopefully influence important policies in the childcare system and was supported by the key ministries of the Russian Federation – Ministry of Health and Social Development, Ministry of Education and Science, Ministry of Economic Development. The result of the research were presented at the international research and training conference «A family for every child- Ensuring a child’s right to live and be brought up in the family” held in Moscow on December 2-4, 2008.

Key research findings included:
• Over the last 15 years, the number of cases involving termination of parental rights has gone up 3,7 times;
• In 1990, there was one child without parental care per 1,000 children. Today, the share of children without parental care has grown 4,5-fold, that is 4,5 children without parental care per 1,000 child population. Over the next 5-7 years, this share should be brought down to, at least, 2,5 children per 1,000.
• 24% of children without parental care live in institutions;
• Current measures in the area of early crisis intervention with families are inadequate and are undertaken too late, when families are already in a critical situation.

" We appreciate support provided by all our partners but it is particularly generous and brave for a corporate donor to fund research and conferences.  The results achieved are often long term, with less immediate and tangible results.  This research was an important first step to a process that in the long run will impact on many children’s lives." - commented Bertrand Bainvel, UNICEF Country Representative.

The text of the research may be found here.

UNICEF in the Russian Federation works mainly on child protection, youth development and participation, prevention against HIV/AIDS and promotes a more inclusive society in which every child has the right to develop and participate.
