Planned activities
As part of its humanitarian program in the North Caucasus, UNICEF will focus its efforts on continuing to address the immediate humanitarian needs of the most vulnerable segment of the crisis-affected population across the following four sectors of intervention:
Education
- Peace Education
- IDP schools and Children Centers in Ingushetia
- Early Childhood Education Centers in Chechnya
- Provision of Educational Materials
More than 200,000 pre-school and school-age children will benefit from UNICEF initiatives and actions in the following ways:
- UNICEF will continue to manage 28 schools through which education will be provided to over 2,600 IDP children from Chechnya. Support will also be continued for the 4 existing Child Friendly Spaces (kindergartens) catering to 590 of the most vulnerable IDP children living in settlements of Ingushetia;
- UNICEF will expand (from 10-20) its network of community-based Early Childhood Education (ECE) centres to reach 1,000 young people in Chechnya;
- In partnership with the Ministry of Education, UNICEF will conduct an overall assessment of the physical status of education facilities in Chechnya and will renovate and equip 15-20 schools and kindergartens;
- School furniture, stationery, visual aids and textbooks will be provided to ‘parallel’ and regular schools in Ingushetia;
- Support will be given to 31 ‘parallel’ primary and secondary schools accommodating some 3,500 IDP children in Ingushetia;
- In partnership with the MoE of Chechnya and Ingushetia, UNICEF will conduct an assessment on the status of girls’ education with a view to event;ually help increase girls’ access to equal education opportunities;
- UNICEF will launch a regional project for peace and tolerance education through various complementary initiatives (including seminars, festivals, sport contests, exchange visits) reaching up to 200,000 children and young people in the region;
- Psychosocial rehabilitation will be provided to some 21,000 conflict–affected traumatized children.

Some 180,000 children, 45,000 IDPs and other adult population in Chechnya will benefit from the following efforts by UNICEF aimed at improving their current situation and their lives:
- Plans to further strengthen its Mine Risk Education (MRE) activities, with an increasing shift towards a community-based approach;
- Production and distribution of newly-designed MRE items including booklets, posters, T-shirts, and calendars as well as launch media campaigns;
- UNICEF will open an additional 6 leisure centres in Chechnya, doubling the number of centres that will involve some 2,000 children in interactive MRE activities;
- Supporting the provision to women and children of prosthetic-orthopaedic devices and assistance, physical rehabilitation, and assistive devices such as wheelchairs, crutches, and walking sticks;
- Providing psychosocial assistance to 140 mine/UXO child survivors and disabled children as well as vocational training to 140 young survivors or other disabled children of Chechnya.
Health

Some 200,000 people, both in Chechnya and Ingushetia, will benefit from the following actions and programs of UNICEF:
- The procurement and distribution of Mother, Child, Health (MCH) basic supplies to health facilities as well as essential emergency supplies to some 50 health centers;
- Training of 240 primary health-care staff in immunization services and cold-chain maintenance;
- Provision of 30 primary health facilities with cold-chain equipment and immunization consumables;
- Distribution of informational materials on the Expanded Program on Immunization (EPI) to more than 200 health care facilities;
- The establishment of two Youth-Friendly clinics and two Youth Information Centers for HIV/SDI prevention activities;
- Designing, printing and distribution of IEC materials to 100,000 young people in Chechnya and Ingushetia.
Water and Sanitation Program
- Water Purification and Distribution
- Hygiene Education in Grozny
Some 105,000 people, particularly women and children, will be reached through the following key actions:
- Purification and distribution of water to people in Grozny;
- Distribution of water supplies to 60 educational facilities and 32 MCH health-care facilities as well as to vulnerable families in Grozny;
- Promotion of hygiene education among 40,000 residents in TACs as well as for 28,000 schoolchildren in Grozny;
- Distribution of hygiene education printed materials including 20,000 pamphlets, 55,000 calendars and 10,000 posters to schoolchildren, hospital patients and returnees living in TACs in Grozny.
