3. InclusivenessUNICEF fights against the stigma and discrimination in society that prevents children from enjoying the rights they all have, regardless of their abilities, health status or origins. We promote social inclusion of children from especially poor and vulnerable families, migrant children, disabled children, and also HIV-affected children, ensuring their access to kindergartens, schools and other social services, where they pose no harm to others and where ignorance is the main barrier. Projects and information campaigns support the sharing of correct information, social support approaches and risk management UNICEF cooperates with specialized NGO ‘Perspektiva’ and education authorities in several regions to develop and strengthen inclusive education approaches, enabling children to go to mainstream schools where their special needs will be met instead of leaving these children to isolated and segregated lives stuck at home or in special institutions. Peace and tolerance education and youth activities supported by UNICEF have generated huge enthusiasm among the many young people in the North Caucasus republics where social tensions are still high. Psychosocial rehabilitation for the huge numbers of children suffering from trauma in Chechnya helps avoid marginalization and further mental suffering. Social exclusion is a major obstacle to maximizing the potential of any child. A cohesive society where differences are respected and celebrated benefits every person – man, woman and child.
