Tsunami Second Anniversary Special
After the wave Reflections marking the second anniversary of the tsunami in South Asia Two years on from the Tsunami young people in Sri Lanka, southern India and the Maldives are still living with the consequences of the terrible day when the familiar sea crashed onto the shores and changed their lives forever. Images from the disaster, which struck countries around the Indian Ocean, prompted people to respond with unprecedented generosity. It is inevitable that after a disaster the publicity will fade. It is inevitable too that people will manage in the aftermath in different ways, and that the ability to respond to need will vary according to local conditions. UNICEF Regional Office for South Asia has visited some of the affected communities in the region and recorded their images and stories. Some people are still languishing in a limbo of temporary shelters, or struggling to make ends meet while grieving the loss of their loved ones. Many of them however are experiencing, for the first time in their lives, the benefits of better housing, improved primary healthcare services and education for their children, as well as access to clean water and good sanitation. For while the tsunami brought suffering and uncertainty - it has also brought opportunities for social change and human development on a mass scale. Just as the appalling consequences for people should not be forgotten, not should the generosity of those who gave. UNICEF hopes that these images and stories will give insights into how much has been done and some sense on how donations make a difference. Country updates
