Fundraising Campaign for Flood Victims Nears EndOn August 29 and 30, UNICEF Romania made the last delivery of emergency supplies to children in the areas affected by the July floods. Over 1,000 children in 9 communities from Iasi and Suceava Counties received packages with personal hygiene and sanitary items, and backpacks with toys and clothing items (pyjamas, T-shirts, shorts, training suits). The packages have a total value of nearly Euro 48,000. These actions are part of the relief campaign for the child victims of the floods in Northern Romania initiated by Realitatea TV and UNICEF. The delivery and distribution is being carried out with the support of the Ministry of Interior and Administrative Reform which is providing transportation. Romanian Angel Appeal, ARAS and Green Pixel have also been involved, contributing volunteers to assemble the packages. UNICEF’s relief work within the campaign “Romania Takes Roots” will continue. In the week August 25-20, 24 children from Vişeul de Sus (Maramureş County) went to a camp in Hungary organized by the Agenda Timisoara Press Group together with the Zoltan Kovacs foundation. The Ministry of Interior and Reform and the Maramures Prefect’s Office also contributed to the organization of this camp, covering the costs for the emergency issuance of the children’s passports. In the period August 25 – September 5, SOS Children’s Villages will organise a tour in 10 affected villages. With their help, 2,000 children will have the chance to play and will learn new games and how to make their own toys. This week, the SOS team performs for the children in Doljeşti and Tămăşeni (Neamt County). So far, the campaign has raised over Euro 552,000. With these funds, UNICEF is distributing emergency kits and school supplies to the child victims, organising camps and providing the most affected schools with furniture and didactic materials. In August, UNICEF distributed packages with personal hygiene products and sanitary items and backpacks with clothes and toys to 4,000 children in 42 villages. Over 150 children have attended camps and another 2,000 participated in the SOS Children’s Villages project. The total value of these actions is more than Euro 200,000. UNICEF’s attention now turns to ensuring that the child victims of the floods are properly equipped for the new school year.
