More Emergency Supplies for the Children of Moldova and MaramureşOn August 22-23, 2008, UNICEF Romania makes a third delivery of emergency supplies to children in the areas affected by the July floods. Over 860 children from 21 communities from Maramureş, Iaşi and Suceava counties will receive packages with personal hygiene and sanitary items, and backpacks with toys and clothing items (pyjamas, T-shirts, shorts, training suits). The packages have a total value of nearly Euro 45,000. These actions are part of the relief campaign for the child victims of the floods in Northern Romania initiated by Realitatea TV and UNICEF. UNICEF New Zealand Goodwill Ambassadors, Gareth and Joanne Morgan, currently in Romania, will participate in the delivery of supplies to the children in Iaşi County.
The delivery and distribution is being carried out with the support of the Ministry of Interior and Administrative Reform which is providing transportation and teams of gendarmes to help in assembling and distributing the supplies to children. The Romanian Foundation for Children, Community and Family have also been involved, contributing volunteers to assemble the packages. In the period August 9-15, UNICEF delivered emergency hygiene supplies and backpacks with clothes and toys to a total value of Euro 82,000 for nearly 2,000 children in Bacău, Neamţ and Botoşani Counties. Next week, UNICEF will finalize the distribution of emergency supplies covering the remaining affected communities in Iaşi and Suceava Counties.
UNICEF’s relief work within the campaign “Romania Takes Roots” will continue. Children from Răchiţeni and Valea Seacă (Iaşi County) are attending a camp organized by Close To You Romania Foundation. Hundreds more children will benefit from camps organised by the National Agency for Youth in partnership with the Ministry of Education, Research and Youth. The affected children will also receive school supplies from UNICEF and several schools will be provided with furniture, didactic materials and books for libraries. “Romania Takes Roots” campaign will continue for a month. In this period, the phone lines and the SMS number will remain open for donations.
