Newsletter Summer 2008
UNICEF Goodwill Ambassadors
UNICEF Goodwill Ambassador Nana Mouskouri and National Goodwill Ambassador for Romania Andreea Marin Bănică typify how prominent and important is the role of Goodwill Ambassadors in UNICEF’s objectives of protecting and enhancing the rights of children
Introduction
UNICEF Romania Representative Edmond McLoughney introduces the pilot issue of Unite for Children, explaining that each quarterly issue will work around a theme that explains and clarifies a particularly pressing issue facing children inside and outside Romania, and UNICEF’s role in making that issue less problematic
The Milk of Human Kindness
This issue’s theme is breastfeeding, and our feature article catalogues why breast milk lays the foundation for good health for a newly born child. It investigates why some mothers are forced to choose alternative methods of feeding and introduces UNICEF’s Baby Friendly Hospital Initiative, a programme that has saved the lives of millions of babies by focusing on improving the skills of staff in maternity hospitals and making conditions more inviting for women with infant children. In the next few years it is hoped that an increasing number of Romania’s maternity facilities will be accorded ‘baby friendly’ status
All the Stars and More!
One of Romania’s most popular fundraising drives, the aim of this year’s UNICEF Gala Telethon was to raise enough money to enable 20 Romanian maternity facilities to pursue ‘baby friendly’ status, and to generate momentum so that more will follow. Televised throughout the evening on Romania’s national television channel, TVR1, our special guest UNICEF Goodwill Ambassador Nana Mouskouri joined Romania’s most prominent celebrities in an entertaining evening that raised funds and awareness
A Grateful Thank You to Donors
UNICEF highly appreciates for the generosity of its donors, and these pages highlight how several companies are genuinely and actively involved in improving the lives of children in their areas
