UNICEF Romania appoints the first National Goodwill Ambassador

Bucharest,
December 11, 2006

UNICEF celebrates 60 years of world presence. The United Nations established UNICEF in 1946 to meet the emergency needs of children in post-war Europe and China and soon broadened its mandate to address the long-term needs of children and women in developing countries everywhere. In 1965, UNICEF received the Nobel Peace Prize and in 1989, the UN General Assembly adopted the Convention on the Rights of the Child, the most widely accepted human rights treaty in history.
Currently, UNICEF works in 156 countries and territories, supporting child health and nutrition, good water and sanitation, quality basic education for all boys and girls, and the protection of children from violence, exploitation, and AIDS.

UNICEF has been present in Romania since 1991, offering assistance to the Romanian authorities and civil society to create a favorable environment for the disadvantaged children, by developing complex health, nutrition, education and protection programmes. Lately, UNICEF has begun a series of activities to attract funds in the benefit of the Romanian disadvantaged children and the response of the international and local companies was very quick and enthusiastic.

On the occasion of the 60 years’ anniversary, UNICEF Romania launched the UNICEF 60 stamp issue, made by Romfilatelia, one of UNICEF’s traditional partners. The stamp presents in a unitary manner the logo of the organization and the image of a group of optimistic children, symbol of UNICEF’s mission – to ensure the wellbeing of the children worldwide.

Also during the event, Pierre Poupard, UNICEF Representative in Romania announced the appointment of Mrs. Andreea Marin as the first National Goodwill Ambassador for Romania. In 2007 Andreea Marin will support UNICEF Romania for advocacy for the rights of the child and raising awareness on their issues. During the past two years, Andreea Marin supported many of UNICEF’s actions, proving to be one of the greatest supporters of the cause of children. At her initiative TVR partnered with UNICEF for the 2005 Smile for Asia campaign in the benefit of the children affected by the Tsunami and for the 2006 Cherish Life campaign for the children affected by floods in Southern Romania.

“In becoming a UNICEF ambassador, Andreea Marin joins a list of well-known and highly regarded personalities from sports, music, and performing arts who are supporting UNICEF’s work at national, regional and global levels. These ambassadors are chosen not only because of their name recognition but more particularly because of the respect in which they are held worldwide and their appeal as genuine humanitarians”, declared Pierre Poupard.
