Smiley is the new UNICEF Goodwill Ambassador for Romania
Bucharest, 12 November 2013 – As of 12 November 2013, UNICEF Romania has a new Goodwill Ambassador, Andrei Tiberiu Maria, known by his stage name Smiley. He is one of the most popular and appreciated pop artists in Romania. Smiley has also managed to build a brilliant career as a music producer and TV personality. He has supported different social causes and demonstrated commitment to helping children. Smiley first teamed up with UNICEF for the Hard Rock Café concert where he used his talent and fame to raise funds for the invisible children.
“Since we share the same values, we are sure that, together with Smiley, we will be able to focus the public spotlight on the difficulties facing vulnerable children while proving that they are a priority. Moreover, with the support of such a loved and appreciated artist, I am convinced that we will get more people involved for the benefit of children so that every child can grow in his or her family, go to school, have access to healthcare, and benefit from protection,” declared Sandie Blanchet, UNICEF Representative in Romania.
Along with international ambassadors like David Beckham, Shakira, Orlando Bloom, Ricky Martin and national ambassadors Andreea Marin and Gheorghe Hagi, Smiley will serve as the voice of children who need support in order to have their rights fulfilled and get a chance for a better life, making children’s messages heard in Romania.

It is both a real joy and a great challenge for me to accept this title and I am committed to do everything I can to give children a happier, more peaceful and – as much as possible – more carefree life,” stated Smiley. “Today’s children are the ones who will build our future, so they deserve our commitment, care and help for a better Romania and, of course, for a better world. Thank you, UNICEF, for this opportunity!" he added.
Smiley is already involved in UNICEF’s “End Violence” campaign carried out between November 2013 and February 2014 in Romania. The spot is being run on different media outlets. UNICEF works with its governmental and non-governmental partners to find efficient solutions for preventing violence against children, including by improving the legal framework and influencing attitudes, behaviours and social norms.
For more than 50 years, UNICEF has been working with celebrities to bring the needs of children worldwide into the public eye. These public figures take action to protect children’s rights and help vulnerable children lead a better life. By drawing attention to children’s problems, contributing to resource mobilisation and leveraging public policies, celebrities that have partnered up with UNICEF send out a clear message: children are a priority.
