In 2010, BRD - Groupe Société Générale organised the second annual Solidarity Week, an ambitious volunteering campaign, between 10 and 18 June. As in 2009, the volunteering took place countrywide for the benefit of UNICEF.
The Future Starts in School campaign was promoted in over 900 BRD branches around the country. Acting as “volunteers”, BRD staff were on a mission: to sign up more than 600 customers as long-term donors to UNICEF. The donors had to sign a pre-scheduled payment sheet, setting up a commission-free monthly direct debit, with the amount specified by the donors themselves. Monthly donations to UNICEF’s bank account are vital, as they enable us to better plan our activities.
In total over 4,000 BRD employees from around the country, who put in 6,000 volunteering hours, took part in UNICEF’s fundraising campaign. To thank the BRD employees for their involvement, on 14 October, UNICEF Goodwill Ambassador Gheorghe Hagi hosted a special concert with the support of the George Enescu Museum. The concert, given by the children’s choir of the Dinu Lipatti Secondary School of Music, violinist Gabriel Croitoru and piano player Mihai Ungureanu, followed the Solidarity Week champions’ award ceremony.
We would like to give special thanks to all BRD employees and donors who, through their generous efforts, made it possible for UNICEF to continue its most important project in the area of education: to boost the school attendance of children from disadvantaged communities . UNICEF is implementing a large-scale project at the family, school and community levels in 38 communities in the 2010/2011 school year, aimed at decreasing the school dropout rate and preventing it in the long-term.
