All the Stars and More!UNICEF GALA TELETHON IN PICTURES UNICEF Romania’s Gala Telethon 2008 succeeded both in fundraising terms and in terms of raising awareness of the vital importance of breastfeeding to a large television audience – it is unlikely that any person who watched the Telethon could not help but be influenced as to how vulnerable is a newly born child and how crucial is proper nutrition and care at that special time. Above everything else, we hope that Romanians absorbed the message and will be persuaded to help and encourage young mothers to breastfeed exclusively for at least the first six months of a child’s life. We would like to thank each and every caller who made the effort to pick up the telephone and donate. We had set out to raise enough money to establish a further 20 Baby Friendly hospitals in Romania, and the final figure of $440,000 will certainly help towards achieving that objective. There are always so many people and groups to thank after such an initiative, particularly one as successful as this. It was wonderful to see UNICEF Goodwill Ambassador Nana Mouskouri in Romania for the first time, and to hear the conviction with which she spoke of the rights for children. We were grateful to Romania’s President Traian Băsescu and Prime Minister Călin Popescu Tăriceanu taking time out from their busy schedules to take calls from donors. We appreciated once again Andreea Marin Bănică’s coolness in the spotlight, as did a huge television audience. We are grateful to all the celebrities and personalities who attended and took calls and entertained viewers. Our thanks go to UNICEF’s volunteers too, who were coordinated and efficient, and last but certainly not least, we would like to thank Liana Săndulescu and her team at TVR for having the managerial and technical prowess to bring off such an event. Together we really did Unite for Children!
