Overall gender disparity in terms of school enrolment rates is around 1% for grades 1-8, thus minute in comparison with the rural-urban disparity. As is the case in many other countries, somewhat fewer girls enroll in grade 1, while more boys drop out in the course of compulsory education.
The mapping of gender gaps in education has highlighted systemic flaws. The system’s present incapacity is likely to make it perpetuate the traditional, cultural gender stereotypes prevailing in the society.
Knowledge about gender perspective, namely the way of analyzing and interpreting situations from a viewpoint that takes into consideration gender constructions in society (for women and men) and searching for solutions to overcome the gaps, is relatively low among teachers, and textbooks continue to promote male characters. Learning situations do not encourage gender partnership and the active participation of both girls and boys, and there is also a lack of early gender socialization, especially in early learning institutions.
