Gender mainstreaming in education
The overall gender disparity in regard to enrolment rates is around 1% for grades 1-8, thus minute in comparison with the rural-urban disparity. Common to many other countries, somewhat fewer girls enrol in grade 1, while more boys drop out in the course of compulsory education. The mapping of gender gaps in education has highlighted systemic flaws. The problems are less of access and participation to education but rather of lack of systemic absorption of the gender issues. The system’s present incapacity is likely to make it reproduce the traditional, cultural gender stereotypes prevailing in the society. Knowledge about gender perspective is relatively low among teachers, and textbooks continue to promote male characters. Learning situations do not promote partnership and active participation of girls and boys in addition to absence of early gender socialization within the ECD apparatuses.
