Members of the UNICEF- Spain Council visit Dominican Republic

Santo Domingo.- Renowned personalities of the Council and the UNICEF Spain Managing Team recently visited the country to announce a series of projects currently under execution as part of the Cooperation Program UNICEF-Dominican Republic.

UNICEF-Spain has existed for many decades, a very important instance for its level of cooperation with Latin America, the Caribbean, and Africa, composed of renowned Spanish public personalities that volunteer in many functions.

The visitors group was headed by Mr. Ángel Naval Balbín, president of the UNICEF Asturias Committee; Bienvenida Guerrero Ramón, president of the UNICEF Valencia Community Committee; Nereida Castro Martín, president of the UNICEF Canarias Committee;  Fernando Jimeno Duque, president of the UNICEF Cantabria Committee; José María Vila, member of the Council; Javier Cantero Fernández, director  of New Technologies and Organizational Development and y Arancha Montes, director of Human Resources and Organization.

During the initial stage of their visit, they held meetings with Tilza Ares, Manager of the Rectory for the National Infancy and Adolescence Council (CONANI); José Rafael Pérez Modesto, General Manager of the National Social Security Council and Mr. Julio Sanz Marchena, Deputy Minister of Labor. They were also received in ASONAHORES by a delegation of its Board of Directors headed by Julio Llibre, President and Arturo Villanueva, Vice-president, and by Francisco Castillo, Director  Sol Meliá  Hotels Punta Cana and Santo Domingo.

During their stay they visited the Doctor Antonio Musa Hospital, in San Pedro de Macorís, where they learned the experiences  in the decrease of the mortality rates for mothers and newborns with the sepsis reduction strategy; the initiative of the Friend of Infancy and Mothers Hospital, as well as the birth registry unit. Likewise, they had time during their visit to the town to visit a children farm in Consulo and share an afternoon with a group of mothers and their children, organized by the Pastoral Materno Infantil of the Catholic Church at the Batey Don Juan.

The members of the UNICEF-Spain Council were very impressed after their encounter with youths and adolescents from the Town Councils of Baní, Azua and San José de Ocoa. They valued this experience as one of a kind featuring youth participation in 12 municipalities of the country and expressed their congratulations to all youths for their maturity and level of commitment.

The last say, they traveled to Samaná where they learned the myriad efforts being performed in many communities of this province towards the prevention of sexual tourism and exploitation and children and young girls and boys. There they were received by the Regional Attorney General, Juan Carlos Medina and the Children Department Attorney, Dr. Nilca Castillo; as well as by a group of students, parents , teachers and guidance counselors of the school district, all of them whom shared their experience in abuse prevention.
