Children are not sexual toys

Campaign for the prevention of commercial sexual exploitation

Under the headings “Children are not sexual toys” and “Their innocence is not for sale”, a group of organisations has launched two campaigns aimed at preventing the abuse and commercial sexual exploitation of children and adolescents.

These campaigns are highlighting the need to protect children, as well as informing the family and adults responsible for their protection about the measures they need to take in order to prevent putting children in high-risk situations. It seeks to achieve ZERO TOLERANCE for abuse and commercial sexual exploitation, while encouraging people to denounce it and providing children with increased protection.

These campaigns are part of an initiative by the Inter-institutional Commission against the Abuse and Commercial Sexual Exploitation of Children and Adolescents, made up by the Dominican State Prosecutors Office, the National Children’s and Adolescents’ Council (CONANI), the National Hotels and Restaurants Association (ASONAHORES), the Ministries of Tourism and Labour, with the support of the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF), sponsorship from the Italian Cooperation agency and the creative support of the Cumbre Nazca Advertising Agency.

With its hard-hitting slogans and a direct communications style, the campaign aims to highlight the fact that protecting children and adolescents is everybody’s responsibility, using radio and television spots, billboards on main avenues, posters in public bathrooms, leaflets and advertising for supermarket shopping trolleys, as well as garbage cans with the slogan: “Reserved for paedophiles, put garbage where it belongs”.

As well as being diffused in the country, translated into four languages and placed on planes travelling to and from the Dominican Republic, the Dominican Ministry of Tourism presented this campaign at the Internationale Tourismus Börse (International Tourism Bourse) ITB in Berlin, which has become the international tourism industry’s main communications and marketing forum since its foundation in 1966.

Abuse and Commercial Sexual Exploitation is a Crime, and so is ignoring it.
How can we fight abuse and commercial sexual exploitation of children and adolescents?
- By protecting children and adolescents and teaching them how to protect themselves from sexual abuse.
- If you are aware of any situation where a minor is being abused or sexually exploited, please call: 1-809-200-7393.
Remember! All children and adolescents under the age of 18 are minors.

Protection Legislation
In the Dominican Republic the Penal Code, the Child Protection Laws, the Law against domestic violence and the law against the Illicit Trafficking of Migrants penalise physical, psychological and sexual abuse of children and adolescents with imprisonment.
Jail penalties of up to 30 years are imposed on national or international perpetrators who trade, traffic or use children and adolescents in the sale, marketing, production and distribution of pornographic materials.

International Commitments
The Dominican Republic is a signatory of the International Convention on the Rights of the Child and has ratified the Optional Protocol of the International Convention on the Rights of the Child regarding sale, prostitution and pornography of children and adolescents in the International Labour Organisation’s Convention 182 on the worst forms of child labour.

It is important for countries, societies and individuals to guarantee the rights of children and adolescents, respecting national laws and current international commitments.
