This 48-page booklet highlights UNICEF's work in 20 countries in Central and Eastern Europe and the Commonwealth of Independent States. No other region has been through so dramatic a transformation in so short a time, and today's children are increasingly at risk due to rising poverty, HIV infection, trafficking and deteriorating social services. UNICEF works to address these threats to children that mar the region's future prospects. The booklet outlines our action in seven areas: ensuring a protective environment for all children; fighting HIV/AIDS; promoting a voice for young people; ensuring the best start in life for every child; providing a good quality, basic education; reaching every child with life-saving vaccines; and tackling iodine deficiency.
