The reduction of low birthweight forms an important contribution to the Millennium Development Goal for reducing child mortality. But more than half of the infants born in the developing world are not weighed, posing a major challenge to measuring the global incidence of low birthweight. This joint WHO/UNICEF publication uses recently revised estimates to report on this condition that affects more than 20 million infants worldwide - almost 96% of low birthweight infants are born in developing countries.
