- The Plight of Street Children. UN General Assembly Resolution 49/212 (1994)
The Committee on the Rights of Child recommended the drafting of UN guidelines to ensure the protection or alternative care of children who do not or cannot live with their families. Given the increasing numbers of children affected by armed conflict or living in families and communities affected by HIV/AIDS, such standards are especialy needed to better protect children deprived of parental care. A draft version of the UN Guidelines for the Protection and Alternative Care of Children without Parental Care (June 2006) is being reviewed by the UN Committee on the Rights of the Child and subsequent discussion by interested governments and UN agencies and bodies will follow.
