Too often adolescents are defined by their problems rather than their strengths, and programs for young people created in response to crises or troubling behaviours. A more effective, long-lasting strategy is to invest in adolescent development-from the earliest years of this important time of life-and to actively involve young people themselves in finding solutions to the difficulties they and their communities and families face.
In fact, adolescents -both boys and girls- are underused, but valuable resources for positive change. They have enormous potential to contribute positively to finding solutions to the problems that they face. Their participation also enhances community development projects that improve the quality of life for their families, communities, and the greater society. Many are already assuming important responsibilities as young parents, caregivers, mentors, and community activists.
