Assessment of UNICEF's response to HIV/AIDS in Young People the 90's

UNICEF is undertaking an assessment of UNICEF's response to HIV/AIDS in young people in the 90's. Reducing HIV/AIDS in Young People was stated as a key priority by UNICEF as early as 1992 and an analysis of the situation started in the late 1980's. A recent review of UNICEF programme approaches shows that we have a wealth of experience to learn from. What is the relationship between policy and programme implementation in the field of HIV/AIDS and Young People? What are the lessons learned? These are some of the questions being asked in the assessment which will contribute to the Special Session on Children in September 2001 and will help strengthen UNICEF's response to HIV in young people. A desk review of the policy development and programme implementation and a comprehensive database is being developed for the assessment. A review of materials from selected countries is ongoing. A final report is expected early/mid 2001.
