WHO AFRO regional consultation on Adolescent Friendly Health Services (AFHS) held in collaboration with UNICEF.

Harare 17-21 October 2000.

The AFRO regional consultation on Adolescent Friendly Health Services (AFHS) brought together more than 70 participants from the Sub-Saharan region from NGOs, bilateral projects, research institutions, government partners and UNICEF, WHO and UNFPA involved in setting up, providing and measuring AFHS. The objectives of the meeting were to share experiences, support the development of a regional action plan and develop a regional synthesis document on AFHS. The meeting was the second of two regional meetings which will provide input to a global consultation on AFHS which will be held (tentatively) in January 2001. A key achievement was the development of a consensus statement on the components of and approaches to AFHS which emphasized the importance of analysing adolescent health and developmental needs and health/help seeking behavior of adolescents, strengthening community involvement and developing sustainable approaches. Strong participation of young people from NGOs and projects at the meeting and a wealth of knowledge and experience exchange were also achieved. Upcoming events WHO global technical consultation on Adolescent Friendly Health Services in Switzerland, January 2001 (tentative date) Following two regional AFHS consultations this meeting aims to create common understanding of AFHS among the international agencies active in this area and to develop a consensus on a global research and action agenda for this area. .
