UNICEF/HQ98-0914/ GIACOMO PIROZZI
In 1998, Teresa, 14, cooks outside the house she shares with her three younger siblings in the town of Kitwe, central Zambia. Since her parents died of AIDS, Teresa cares for her two sisters and a brother, while also attending the local community school. UNICEF-assisted community schools are substitutes for formal schools, often built, staffed and maintained in small communities by the parents for children who are very poor and cannot afford standard school fees, or who cannot travel the frequently long distances to go to formal school. Many of the children are also orphans, some of whose parents died of AIDS.
