The nations of the world are listed here according to the progress they are making towards eradicating polio by the year 2000.

The first step is a high level of routine immunization. National immunization days can then push the virus to the edge of extinction. Thereafter, every single case of child paralysis must be investigated and - if proved to be polio - surrounded by another immunization blitz.

Polio virus cannot survive for more than a few months without a human host. By the year 2000, all doors should be locked against the virus.
