DHL partners with UNICEF to promote ‘11 Commitments for Children’ in Angola

LUANDA, Angola, 22 May 2008 – Today marked the launch of a national partnership between UNICEF and DHL in Angola to promote child survival, development, education and protection. 

The partnership was announced at a joint press conference in Luanda by the President of Angola’s National Children Council and Minister of Social Welfare João Baptista Kussumua along with the General Manager of DHL Express Angola Mario Pone and UNICEF Angola Representative Angela Kearney.

Under the aegis of UNICEF’s global agreement with DHL, this partnership in Angola is intended to support the ‘11 Commitments to Children’ that were made by the Government of Angola and its development partners at the third national Child Forum for Children in June of last year.

The Commitments cover all facets of children’s rights such as protecting their health and safety as well as ensuring them an education.

To launch the partnership, DHL will include colourful stickers with the 11 Commitments on all packages for distribution within the national territory, with the hope of educating DHL’s clients about the partnership and its goals.

Children are the ‘absolute priority’

The Commitments are a result of concerted efforts at the highest political level to make children the ‘absolute priority’ in Angola’s national development agenda.

These commitments constitute a comprehensive agenda for children that UNICEF and its partners are helping the Government of Angola turn into feasible plans, policies and budgets for children.

Mr. Kussumua, has taken the lead in launching the 11 Commitments in all of the provincial capitals of Angola to raise awareness of their existence and importance.

As of today, DHL is delivering the message to an even wider audience and is thus joining the call to make children the ‘absolute priority’.
