Uganda, 2007: Free primary education has raised enrolment rates to 83 per cent in Uganda. Still, children – especially girls – of the semi-nomadic pastoralist Karamojongs face additional barriers to education; less than 40 per cent of the community’s children attend school. A UNICEF-supported non-formal educational model, sensitive to Karamojong culture, is helping to boost enrolment. A Karamojong girl runs to class in Naitakwaé Town.
