November 2014: Ebola survivors – like Mariama Kiadii – develop a level of immunity or resistance to the virus that makes them invaluable foot soldiers if they choose to join the fight against the disease. “By the grace of God, we survived,” she says. “And then they called us … [as] we would be the best people to help. So that was how we came to this [treatment unit in Monrovia]. I’ve got my department, which is the laundry. We wash the scrubs, the boots, the gloves, and so on.”
