Iraq, 2012: Far too many of Iraq’s 15.7 million children – nearly half of the total population – have had their childhoods defined by violence. Boys play in the Alawi neighbourhood of Baghdad. Iraq once enjoyed some of the highest indicators for children in the Middle East and North Africa Region. After decades of turmoil, the country now suffers from some of the worst, violating children’s right to survive and thrive.
