Preventing tetanus #1

Afghanistan, 2010: Immunization saves an estimated 2–3 million children each year from life-threatening diseases, including tetanus. An infant receives a pentavalent vaccine against tetanus and other diseases, in Mazar-e-Sharif. By the end of 2011, some 82 per cent of newborns were protected against neonatal tetanus through vaccination. But missed immunizations threaten eradication of the disease, which claimed the lives of 58,000 newborns in 2010 alone.
