Child protection

Ghana, 2014: Gloria Tia, 17, standing near luggage outside a building in Walewale Town in Northern Region, refused to forgo her dream of getting an education. She ran away from her rural village – beginning at age 10 – to escape forced marriage. Child marriage affects all children, but girls are most at risk. The harmful and widespread practice is common in sub-Saharan Africa. In Ghana, 6 per cent of girls are married before age 15; one quarter by age 18.
