A
one time, big time experience
In its desire to
provide the less fortunate Filipino children with their most
basic needs, UNICEF Philippines launched the first Volunteer
Internship Program last summer 2004 composed of 12 young,
dynamic and passionate individuals. Following the success
of the previous batch, a new set of VIP’s for the year
2005 has been once again recognized. As a matter of fact,
I am now one of those 12 volunteer interns serving and promoting
the advocacy of UNICEF.
Let me share with
you that my first three days here was very tough, thinking
and daydreaming that I am not worthy to be in this foundation.
Working with eleven unique individuals who came from different
universities gave me feelings of intimidation and discomfort.
The reason? I found out that they were Dean’s Listers
and honor students. Unlike me, I seldom join school activities
and was often seen bumming around after school hours. But
in spite of it all, I am more proud in telling you that I
did not confine myself to this. I have searched for something
that could boost my confidence and instill a sense of responsibility
in me. Without a doubt, UNICEF has given me a “One Time,
Big Time” experience that I will always be thankful
of.
Now, let me tell
you the changes that have happened to me in this Internship.
Punk rock is my type of music and that is why I always have
been a rugged dresser myself. UNICEF’s non-implementation
of wearing an office attire has given me an opportunity, not
just to be comfortable, but also to express myself freely.
However, I was considerate enough to think that it wouldn’t
be appropriate to bring a rocker’s image in an office.
I have managed to be decent-looking and was able to set limits
in my way of dressing.
My way of thinking
has been changed as well. I am very much sure that this has
been one of the most active summers for my brain cells. They
had almost no time to relax during those draining planning
and brainstorming days. Still, I benefited from it because
I have increased my knowledge about the various kinds of people’s
lives through immersions and the simple talks I had with my
co-VIP. Also I have learned to consider every detail of matters
as I reason on them. As all of these were happening, I gained
confidence because I already had my mind telling me that I
was improving. The new set of friends I found from my co-VIP’s
helped me grow emotionally and socially. My shyness and awkwardness
were soon forgotten, and out of all our hearty conversations,
trust was built.
Last, but never
the least, my spirituality also came alive more. I am very
thankful that GOD has given me all of these. HE let me see
the realities of life, bringing in to my life those people
who showed much care for me. And most of all, I am very grateful
to HIM that HE gave me this person (I’ll wait for that
day!?) whom I loved so much…..
So this is life,
live out of it, make a difference and touch one’s heart!!!!!
