Little
triumph, big success
I came in late
on the morning of one of our most important meetings. The
group was discussing the details of the upcoming Walkathon
for Children when I came. I saw listed on the board the many
things we had to accomplish on that day: Fax sponsors for
confirmation, Prepare promotional materials, Organize route
for walkathon, Contact musicians for concert, Contact other
volunteers.
The last task fell
on my shoulder. I was with the Human Resources committee.
Hence, I was the most likely candidate to burn phone lines
just to get an affirmative from our volunteers. I recalled
doing the same thing for another activity, our arts workshop.
Out of 10 prospective volunteers, three would have definite
and positive responses. Others would dilly-dally and this
got me a bit upset.
It was also difficult
not to get upset when we tried doing the Face-to-Face campaign
at the Market! Market! Mall. As volunteers, we were challenged
to walk to people in malls and to secure their pledges for
UNICEF projects. Many times, we were brushed aside or frowned
upon. But for every rejection, our drive to get the next person
to pledge even a small amount became more ardent.
No matter how many
No’s or I’m sorry’s I got, I strove harder
to get a Yes!. This made every little triumph a resounding
success.
