Starbucks is an international coffeehouse chain with over 100 branches in the Philippines.  They are considered the leading retailer, roaster and brand of specialty coffee in the world.

Studies show that the most critical period in a child’s brain development is from age zero to six years. In the Philippines, only three out of ten children are able to attend day care centers. The rest grow up without the benefit of early learning mainly due to poverty or lack of awareness on the benefits of early and positive stimulation. As a result, these children often exhibit low interest and performance in school.

Early learning is an important cause for Starbucks.  Since 2004, the company has supported UNICEF’s efforts in Early Childhood Care and Development  (ECCD) through its own Project SparkHope.

Partnership milestones

  • Project SparkHope has assisted a total of 26 communities from 9 provinces and 1 city by providing day-care centers and ECCD packages consisting of play and educational materials for children
  • A SparkHope corner can be found in every Starbucks store which features photos of the adopted barangay and information on UNICEF’s ECCD program
