Walk on the Child’s Side with UNICEF a success
UNICEF, the UN children’s agency, holds its annual walkathon Walk on the Child’s Side today at McKinley Hill in Fort Bonifacio. Initiated in 2005 to create awareness about the organization and raise funds for UNICEF programs in the Philippines, it brings together families, individual and corporate donors as well as UNICEF supporters in a fun-filled fundraising event.
“We recognize that many people want to know how they can help children in the Philippines who are in need. Walk on the Child’s Side 2008 is the perfect opportunity to get to know UNICEF, its programs and the people behind it. All of the proceeds of the event will go UNICEF’s education in emergencies efforts, which is especially helpful to conflict areas such as Mindanao and those children who have been affected by typhoons,” says Vanessa Tobin, UNICEF Representative.
UNICEF’s education in emergencies program is involved in the repair and rehabilitation of classrooms, constructing toilets, giving school supplies to children and providing their teachers with basic teaching supplies.
UNICEF 2008 Walk on the Child’s Side has a 2k walkathon, and 5k and 10k marathons. Prizes were given to Best in Costume (for children) and Most Number of Family Members for the 2k walkathon. For the 5k and 10k, awards for various age categories were given. Families engaged in many fun activities such as inflatable playgrounds for kids and booths selling UNICEF cards and gifts.
