NEW YORK, USA, 2 February 2006 – UNICEF Executive Director Ann M. Veneman today met with reigning Miss Universe Natalie Glebova at a luncheon held at United Nations headquarters. The event was hosted by H.E. Eduardo J. Sevilla Somoza, the Permanent Representative of Nicaragua to the UN. Also present were Permanent Representatives of 13 member states, and UN officials.
Crowned Miss Universe on 30 May 2005, Ms. Glebova has dedicated much of her public work to the fight against HIV/AIDS. Her year-long reign began with a highly publicized trip to South Africa where she took an HIV test in public, in order to raise awareness of the disease and demonstrate the importance of testing. On the same trip Ms. Glebova met with many children living with HIV/AIDS.
Ms. Glebova will spend the remainder of her reign travelling the world as an ambassador for many charitable causes, and will continue supporting efforts against HIV/AIDS. It is estimated that nearly 38 million people worldwide are living with HIV/AIDS, 2.1 million of whom are children aged 0-14.
