Suva City : Pacific TV drama series

Suva City, the first local TV drama series to be produced entirely in the Pacific Islands, follows the entwined lives of University students, a flight attendant, an office worker and their friends and families.  The drama follows the ups and downs of romance, career and university ambitions, drugs and alcohol abuse, sexual harassment in the office, and the pulls of tradition and 'modern' life experienced by young Pacific Islanders.

First Call For Pacific Children explores the situation of children in the Pacific through four "case studies".  Through the lives of four families, the video examines childhood diseases, malnutrition, child abuse and the problem of school dropouts.  The video reveals that with more commitment by Pacific leaders, the media, public services, many of the problems facing Pacific children can be prevented within this decade.

Protecting Our Future

The Convention On The Rights Of Child : monitoring and reporting

In August 1997, the Pacific Regional Consultation on CRC reporting and monitoring was held at the Forum Secretariat in Suva Fiji.  NGO's and government representatives from 15 countries in the Pacific attended the five day workshop to collectively review the processes required for monitoring and reporting child rights as well as implementation issues.  The workshop also allowed participants to actively contribute through the presentation of national laws, policies and practices as well as their national plans of action.  This video highlights some of the issues discussed at the workshop under three main headings.

Is a lively and entertaining insight into issues concerning sexuality and sexual relations confronting young people growing up in Fiji in the 1990's.  This video aims to stimulate discussion on issues such as behavioral change, motivation, risk behavior, safe sex, gender, relationships, HIV/AIDS, negotiating condom use, peer pressure parental pressure and the generation gap.

Anna's Story and Pacific Stories

Pacific Stories center’s on the real life stories of five young women from a range of backgrounds who have experiences unplanned pregnancy and unmarried motherhood in Fiji.  They talk frankly about the differences between the sexes in attitudes towards condoms, safe sex and taking responsibility for their sexual behavior.  They touch on the many challenges they face in dealing with motherhood without a partner, including living with parents, cultural attitudes and boredom.  Anna's story is a short drama exploring issues surrounding the growing number of unplanned adolescent pregnancies.  Anna is a form five student with dreams of going to university.  Her life is suddenly turned upside down when she becomes pregnant.  Without the support of Robert, her boyfriend, she must face the anger the anger of her father, drop out of school, and abandon the prospect of going to university.  The drama aims to stimulate discussion on issues surrounding relations, responsibility and gender.

Jambo Jambo

In Jambo Jambo, young Marshall Islanders talk about the frustrations of growing up in the crowded capital of Majuro where there is little to do.  They talk about the reasons they see for large numbers of youth suicides, excessive drinking and teen pregnancies.  They also talk about their wishes for better life and their intentions to make changes.


Basoga Ni Sala : Crossroads

Bosoga ni Sala is a video documentary that explores the conflicts faced by Fijian youth as they find themselves caught between opposing ways of life – traditional and modern.  Fijian youth grown up in a traditional environment and face unique pressures in today’s rapidly changing society.  Youth leave their  villages in search of jobs in the towns where peer pressure, alcohol and substance abuse land many in prison.  The young  people interviewed in this video give  vivid accounts of their frustrations and sense of alienation as they struggle to find a better direction in their lives.

Kilim Taem

Kilim Taem explores the complex lives of young people living in Port Vila, Vanuatu.  Attracted to the capital by the hope of work and opportunity, young people find themselves :Kilem Taem” or killing time, caught between two worlds – the traditional “Kastom” and one in which western values are promoted.  The Australian filmmakers and researchers, based at the Vanuatu Cultural Centre in Port Vila, spoke to hundereds of young people living in the settlements around Port Vila.

Education : Making a difference for Pacific Island children

Pacific Islands Countries have made a commitment to provide a quality education for every child.  Leaders need to have political will to meet this challenge.  What is needed is vision and commitment, more emphasis on the early years ,and more child-friendly schools.  Parents and communities are important partners in this process.  A large number of children dropping out of school and the inability of other students to even attend school are symptoms for which there is a cure.  This video highlights why change is needed and shows examples of positive changes already taking place.  Now is the time to act, if we are to protect the future of our children, our people and our cultures.

A Video drama and discussion guide
A new tool for teachers and school committees

Jone is a class 7 student who is having problems at school.  He is often truant and is disruptive in class.  Jone’s techaer is Save Lako, but known to his students as “Master Slack”,  At home Jone doesn’t do his homework and his parents lack interest in helping him.  After discussing with other teachers the discipline problems he’s having with his students, Master Lako begins to change his approaches in class.  He and the students are both happy with the result.
