GET Ready Disasters Happen Workshop
UNICEF Pacific/2013/ Zhiyad
A TOT (Training of Trainers) workshop for interpersonal communicators was held last week in Suva as part of the “Get Ready. Disasters Happen.” Campaign led by Fiji’s National Disaster Management Office (NDMO) and Ministry of Health (MoH) and supported by UNICEF with funding from NZAid and AusAID.
The multimedia package which was officially launched on 10th April by NDMO and MoH, was developed late last year with the "Get Ready. Disasters Happen." campaign scheduled to be rolled out this year across 20 subdivisions in Fiji. The multimedia package includes radio and television spots, information education and communication (IEC) materials, an Android App, a website and Facebook quiz promoting 10 key lifesaving practices for families before, during and after a disaster. Participants of the one day workshop were briefed on the importance of effective communication, efficient baseline data collection, proper monitoring and evaluation as well as their role as interpersonal communicators (IPCs) in their respective communities. Important issues such as health, education, violence and abuse during disasters, were also discussed during training.
The "Get Ready. Disasters Happen." mass media campaign is scheduled to take place from August to September 2013.
