UNICEF Pacific has assisted child-centred projects in the Pacific since the 1950s. Today our commitment to the region is covered by a multi-country programme (2008-2012) which is designed for 14 Pacific Island countries. Special attention is paid to three of these countries: Kiribati, Vanuatu and Solomon Islands

The goal of the programme is to support the governments of Pacific Island countries in acknowledging children’s rights and incorporating them into national development strategies. This is done in accordance with National Development Strategies, the United Nations Development Assistance Framework (UNDAF), the Millennium Development Goals (MDG) and the World Fit For Children (WFFC) goals.

The 2008-2012 UNICEF Pacific multi-country programme is focused on creating results for children in three main areas:

Human rights of children are progressively fulfilled as stipulated by theConvention on the Rights of the Child (CRC) and complemented by themConvention on the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination Against Women
(CEDAW)

Quality programming complementing the life-cycle approach – pregnancy, early childhood, primary school-age and adolescence/young adulthood; starting from conception to the age of 18 years

Family and community-based outcomes for children; policy/systems reform; and quality/coverage of services

UNICEF Pacific is taking major steps to improve the quality of lives of children in the Pacific through five different programmes:

Child Protection
Education
Health and Sanitation
HIV and AIDS
Policy Advocacy Planning and Evaluation

In addition, UNICEF Pacific is working in four cross cutting areas essential to achieve results for children and their communities:

All Children’s Rights
Climate Change
Emergency Preparedness
Gender

Partnerships
UNICEF Pacific always works with others to make things better because the challenges are too great to solve alone.

Children are our focus. UNICEF Pacific encourages child participation at all levels

Communities, traditional and religious leaders, youth and women’s groups, national, regional and international non-government organisations work with UNICEF Pacific to reach children, young people and their families

Governments work with UNICEF Pacific from ministers to mayors to service staff

Donors, as UNICEF is funded entirely by voluntary contributions. While the majority of funds come from governments, we also receive considerable help from the private sector, and from individuals.

Empowering people to manage for themselves is a significant part of what UNICEF does. Through cooperation and partnership, we share our global knowledge and experiences to help others achieve results for Pacific children.
