Results for children   In 2008 some of the Pacific countries experienced political instability, land conflicts, rising unemployment, increases in fuel and food price and increase in criminal activities. At the same time, the global economic crisis has contributed to a slow down of financial growth in the region. The region is always vulnerable to natural disasters. In 2008, Fiji and Vanuatu experienced cyclones and there were floods in the Federated States of Micronesia. These factors all challenged the work of UNICEF Pacific and its partners, and overall 2008 saw only moderate progress made in the Pacific towards achieving Millennium Development and World Fit for Children goals. Alignment of key policies, plans, budgets, laws and programmes with the Convention on the Rights of the Child was also limited. The key achievements of UNICEF and its partners in 2008 are summarised below.
