Goal 4: Reduce child mortality
With an under-age-five mortality rate of 27 per 1,000 live births, well below the Middle Eastern regional average of 56 per 1,000 live births, oPt remains on track towards achieving the fourth Millennium Development Goal. Routine immunisation coverage of above 97 per cent has been maintained for the past six years, setting the oPt on track for polio eradication and measles and tetanus elimination by 2010. However, the survival, growth and development of children have been progressively challenged by the current conflict. Military operations, movement restrictions and recurrent power shortages pose a major threat to quality child care service delivery and could reverse the achievements of the last decade. The challenge ahead is to maintain immunization rates, reach those without services and control potential outbreaks.
