WASH Press Brief on Gaza Blockade

Beit Lahia, Gaza, 3 September 2009 – The UN Humanitarian Coordinator, representing UN agencies in the occupied Palestinian territory, and the Association of International Development Agencies, representing multiple NGOs, briefed the press at the Beit Lahia wastewater treatment facility on challenges facing the water and sanitation (WASH) sector due to the blockade on Gaza.

Maxwell Gaylard, UN Humanitarian Coordinator, holding a bottle of water labeled “Water from Gaza” that was presented to him by a Gazan resident who asked him to deliver it to Israeli PM Netanyahu.

Speakers emphasized the need for reconstruction material, spare parts and supplies; the impact of crumbling WASH systems on ordinary civilians; and called for an end to the Gaza blockade.
