Children Municipality Council Re-elections Held in Gaza CityUNICEF, in cooperation with the Municipality of Gaza, is supporting the elections for Children Municipality Councils (CMC) in Gaza City starting April 26, 2005.
More than 18,000 children will be participating in elections held in 18 schools and two community centers in Gaza. The CMCs are parallel municipal councils that take decisions impacting upon children. They plan activities and implement projects in such areas as sports, the environment, education and road safety.
The CMCs influence decisions of mayors and adult municipal councils in best interests of kids. They also contribute positively to community development via small scale projects.
CMCs help to promote children’s right of free expression, and their right to influence any decision related to children. This is in line with the Convention on the Rights of the Child (CRC) – stating that all actions concerning children should be in the best interests of the child shall be a primary consideration.
UNICEF acknowledges the generous contribution of the Canadian International Development Agency (CIDA).
