Press ReleaseResults of the Progress of Nations 2000 opinion poll on AIDSFriday 11 August 2000: In 1999 alone, AIDS killed 2.8 million people. More than 10 million young people (aged 15-24) have become infected with HIV/AIDS, and more than 13 million children under the age of 15 have lost their mother or both parents to the disease since the epidemic began. In light of these statistics, The Progress of Nations 2000 online opinion poll posed the question: "Do you think enough is being done to stop AIDS?" Voting began on 12 July 2000. To date, users have cast 9307 votes. The 'No' side is solidly in the lead with 89% of the total (8305 votes). The 'Yes' votes constitute a mere 11% of the total (1002 votes). If the results of this informal poll are indicative, then most visitors to the UNICEF site clearly believe that more needs to be done to stop AIDS.
