Brazil's TV Cultura wins its second International Council/UNICEF Award

Monday, 22 November 1999: TV Cultura (Brazil) has won the International Council/ United Nations Children's Fund (UNICEF) Award for its outstanding contribution to the 1998 International Children's Day of Broadcasting. The award will be presented today by supermodel Vendela, a UNICEF Spokesperson, at the 27th International Emmy Awards Gala at the New York Hilton in New York City. It is the second consecutive year that TV Cultura has been selected for the prize.

The International Children's Day of Broadcasting, commemorated annually on the second Sunday of December, offers children a unique opportunity to express themselves by participating in the production, reporting and broadcasting of television and radio shows around the world. Last year, 2,000 broadcasters from 170 countries "tuned in to kids" and many created exceptional programs to celebrate the day.

TV Cultura aired 18 hours of outstanding programing around the theme, "What kind of country do you want?". Brazil's President Cardoso broadcast a personal message, stating that the "channel had made everybody stop to think about children and about the future we want to build for them". The Long Way Back Home, a documentary highlighting the plight of the country's street kids was also shown and a special Internet site was set up for the day.

Alongside TV Cultura, YTV, Canada and TFO, Canada were also nominated for the award.

UNICEF's Chief of Broadcasting William Hetzer was delighted with this year's finalists: "We are consistently amazed at the quality of the programs. The three nominees that were selected had outstanding presentations that ranged from 10 to 18 hours long with kids involved in every step of the process. All contained excellent programs for, about and by children."

The International Council/UNICEF Award was created in 1994 by the International Council of the National Academy of Television Arts and Sciences. Its purpose is to recognize the unique programming produced by broadcasters for the International Children's Day of Broadcasting. The previous winners were Sabado Chiquito De Corporan of the Dominican Republic in 1995; TVOntario, Canada in 1996; Namibian Broadcasting Corporation, Namibia in 1997 and TV Cultura, Brazil in 1998.

The eighth annual International Children's Day of Broadcasting will take place this year on Sunday, 12 December 1999.

Among the broadcasters planning to participate: Cartoon Network, USA, Kindernet, The Netherlands; ABC, Australia; The History Channel, USA; CBC, Canada; Disney, Middle East, YLE, Finland, RAI, Italy and Canal Once, Mexico.
