Roger Moore wins New Year honour

Thursday, 31 December 1998: UNICEF Executive Director Carol Bellamy congratulated UNICEF Special Representative for the Film Arts, Roger Moore, on his being made Commander of the Order of the British Empire (CBE) for achievements that include his service to UNICEF. The CBE is one of the highest honours in the New Year's Honours List. The award was announced today.

"Roger's work for UNICEF has helped alert the world to the needs and rights of children and is a continuing source of inspiration around the world," Ms. Bellamy said.

Mr. Moore became Special Representative of UNICEF in August, 1991, at the request of the actress Audrey Hepburn, who herself represented UNICEF for many years until her death. Since his UNICEF appointment, he has represented the agency in many capacities, travelling widely to the world's trouble spots to assess the situation of children. Most recently, Mr. Moore advocated for the needs and rights of children in Mexico and participated in major UNICEF fundraising events in the United States, Canada and Europe.

Mr. Moore is a long-time film, television and stage actor who is best known for his role as James Bond. He presently serves as honourary chairman of the UNICEF/Kiwanis Campaign, which is seeking to raise $75 million to help eliminate iodine deficiency disorders (IDD) by the year 2000.
