Plaza to be dedicated to GrantFriday, 14 June 1996: UNICEF will name a plaza after its late Executive Director James P. Grant as part of its 50th anniversary celebration during its annual Executive Board session next week (17-19 June 1996). The City of New York and the United Nations Development Corporation have granted permission to call the area adjoining UNICEF House the "James P. Grant Plaza". A plaque will be unveiled and dedicated to the memory of Mr. Grant on Tuesday, 18 June 1996. Mr. Grant devoted his life to service to humanity. Through his work in UNICEF and his commitment and determination, he heightened the global conscience to help better serve the needs of the world's most vulnerable -- mothers and children. Multimedia exhibition on UN conferencesThe plaza dedication will coincide with the US opening of "Summitry Works: Words into Actions", an exciting and dynamic interactive multimedia exhibition on United Nations international conferences. It features six interactive tables highlighting each of the international conferences held this decade. The Voices of Youth, an Internet forum for young people on issues raised at these historic meetings, will be accessible from the exhibition, which UNICEF Executive Director Carol Bellamy will open at the UNICEF House Visitors' Centre Exhibition Gallery on Tuesday, 18 June 1996, at 2:30 p.m. Special Executive Board celebrationThe UNICEF Executive Board will hold a 50th UNICEF anniversary commemoration at the United Nations Trusteeship Council Chamber on Wednesday, 19 June 1996, at 4:30 p.m. to be led by Board President Ambassador Ion Gorita and UNICEF Executive Director Carol Bellamy.
