Aventis Pasteur to Donate Millions of Doses of Polio Vaccine To Help Eradicate Polio in Africa

WHAT: Announcement and Photo Opportunity - UNICEF and WHO will announce Aventis Pasteur's donation of millions of doses of polio vaccine to the Global Polio Eradication Initiative to help immunize children against polio in Angola, Liberia, Sierra Leone, Somalia, southern Sudan and other areas where polio vaccine is critically needed.

BACKGROUND: The Global Polio Eradication Initiative has reduced the number of polio-endemic countries from 125 in 1988 to just 10, and is on track to deliver a polio-free world by 2005. The Initiative is spearheaded by WHO, Rotary International, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and UNICEF.

Aventis Pasteur-which has its corporate headquarters in Strasbourg, France-is a prescription drug company that produces polio and other vaccines.
