UNICEF Praises Winterthur for AIDS Contribution

NEW YORK, 14 June 2001 -- UNICEF today praised Winterthur Insurance, a Credit Suisse Group company, for its financial contribution of $1 million to the Global AIDS and Health Fund.
UNICEF Executive Director Carol Bellamy called the gift - the first by a private company - a "true display of leadership."

"We are grateful to Winterthur for taking this step and showing that private firms have a significant role to play in the fight against HIV/AIDS," Bellamy said. "The pandemic threatens not only individuals and families, but whole countries and economies, which means all of us have something at stake. Support from the private sector - be it financial, intellectual, or through direct service - is essential to ending the transmission of HIV."

UNICEF focuses its efforts in three primary areas:

  • prevention among young people;
  • prevention of transmission from mother to child; and
  • care and support for children orphaned by AIDS.

UNICEF also supports care and treatment, research, and global awareness campaigns.

UNICEF is one of the seven principal co-sponsors of UNAIDS.
