UNICEF RECEIVES GIFT OF "BREAD AND FISH" FROM ROMANIA

NEW YORK, 9 November 2001 - In a ceremony taking place at UNICEF House on Sunday, 11th November, the United Nations Children's Fund will receive a set of decorative glass sculptures from the President of Romania, Mr. Ion Iliescu.

This glass artwork, entitled, "Bread and Fish," was created by renowned Romanian artist Mr. Ioan Nemoti. The artwork is being presented to UNICEF by the President as an expression of Romania's support for the upcoming Special Session on Children.

"I am pleased to accept these wonderful sculptures on behalf of UNICEF. This gracious gesture by President Iliescu is a reflection of his country's commitment to reaching the new goals that will be set at the rescheduled UN Special Session on Children next spring," said UNICEF Executive Director, Carol Bellamy.

UNICEF has been working in Romania since 1990. In close cooperation with UNICEF, the Government has paid unprecedented attention to issues of child protection, especially institutionalized children. Romania has reviewed its inter-country adoption policies and mechanisms to ensure that they are in line with international standards and agreements. Focus has also been placed on the development of community social services for vulnerable children and their families.
