Yesterday, the Executive Board concluded its first regular session of 2001. Members began the day by considering the work plan and proposed budget for 2001 of the Private Sector Division, and then turned to a discussion of financial matters (the UNICEF financial report and audited financial statements for the biennium ended 31 December 1999 and report of the Board of Auditors; and a report to the Board of Auditors and Advisory Committee on Administrative and Budgetary Questions on steps taken in response to recommendations of the Board of Auditors on the UNICEF accounts for the biennium 1998-1999).

The next order of business was the pledging event, at which Governments announced their voluntary contributions to UNICEF regular resources for the year 2001.

Actress Mia Farrow addressed the Executive Board, reporting on her visit to Nigeria as a Goodwill Ambassador for UNICEF. Ms. Farrow helped launched a countrywide polio vaccination campaign in Nigeria on 20 January, which was designed to immunize every child under the age of five - a total of 40 million children.

Executive Director Carol Bellamy gave an oral report on staff morale in UNICEF, which was followed by closing statements by Ms. Bellamy and by Ambassador Movses Abelian of Armenia, President of the Executive Board.

On Friday, January 26, the UNICEF Board will hold a joint meeting with the Executive Board of UNDP/UNFPA, with the participation of the World Food Programme, in which progress with the use of Common Country Assessment indicator frameworks will be examined. Mr. Poul Nielson, member of the European Commission, Development and Humanitarian Aid, will address the meeting on "The United Nations and Europe: active multilateral partners".

In the afternoon, a discussion will be held with the participation of the United Nations country team in Nepal, the Vice-Chairman of the National Planning Commission in that country, and the Chair of the United Nations Development Group (UNDG) Working Group on Common Country Assessment Indicators.

UNICEF Executive Director Carol Bellamy will then make a statement, on behalf of UNDG, on concerns regarding staff security.
