Executive Board Update
The Executive Board is the governing body of UNICEF. It
is responsible for providing inter-governmental support to and supervision
of the activities of UNICEF, in accordance with the overall policy guidance
of the General Assembly and the Economic and Social Council of the United
Nations. The Board holds a first and second regular session and an annual

Yesterday, the Executive Board concluded its first regular session
of 2001. Members began the day by considering the work plan and proposed
budget for 2001 of the Private Sector Division, and then turned to a
discussion of financial matters (the UNICEF financial report and audited
financial statements for the biennium ended 31 December 1999 and report
of the Board of Auditors; and a report to the Board of Auditors and
Advisory Committee on Administrative and Budgetary Questions on steps
taken in response to recommendations of the Board of Auditors on the
UNICEF accounts for the biennium 1998-1999).
The next order of business was the pledging event, at which Governments
announced their voluntary contributions to UNICEF regular resources
for the year 2001.
Actress Mia Farrow addressed the Executive Board, reporting on her
visit to Nigeria as a Goodwill Ambassador for UNICEF. Ms. Farrow helped
launched a countrywide polio vaccination campaign in Nigeria on 20 January,
which was designed to immunize every child under the age of five - a
total of 40 million children.
Executive Director Carol Bellamy gave an oral report on staff morale
in UNICEF, which was followed by closing statements by Ms. Bellamy and
by Ambassador Movses Abelian of Armenia, President of the Executive
Board.
On Friday, January 26, the UNICEF Board will hold a joint meeting with
the Executive Board of UNDP/UNFPA, with the participation of the World
Food Programme, in which progress with the use of Common Country Assessment
indicator frameworks will be examined. Mr. Poul Nielson, member of the
European Commission, Development and Humanitarian Aid, will address
the meeting on "The United Nations and Europe: active multilateral
partners".
In the afternoon, a discussion will be held with the participation
of the United Nations country team in Nepal, the Vice-Chairman of the
National Planning Commission in that country, and the Chair of the United
Nations Development Group (UNDG) Working Group on Common Country Assessment
Indicators.
UNICEF Executive Director Carol Bellamy will then make a statement,
on behalf of UNDG, on concerns regarding staff security.
